Statement from 1Sky Campaign on Obama’s Offshore Oil Drilling

“1Sky is deeply disappointed to hear President Obama announce today his commitment to lifting a 20-year old ban on offshore oil drilling by proposing new drilling in waters from Delaware to Florida, in the Gulf of Mexico, and in parts of Alaska.

This dramatic increase of the scope of offshore drilling throughout the coastal United States puts our fragile coastal environments, as well as billions of tourism dollars, at risk -- while still doing relatively little to address our long term energy challenge or our race against time to fight runaway climate change.

A truly bold and visionary step forward on energy policy from President Obama would unleash the power of renewable energies like wind, solar and geothermal to transform our economy, create millions of clean energy jobs, fight climate change, and transition us away from the dirty fuels of the past like oil and coal. President Obama's announcement today will do none of that, and, ironically, may jeopardize as much support as it gains in the fight to pass climate and energy reform through the Senate this spring.

This is clearly not the kind of movement that our country and planet so desperately need – nor is it the direction that President Obama has himself called for in other, more productive moments in the first two years of his administration.”

Environmental Tip of the Day

Open a window!

Ever wonder why you have such horrible headaches and eye irration out the blue? Or how about allergies, respirtory problems and chemical sensitivity? These all may come from Volatile Organic Compounds . The EPA concluded that indoor air is three times as polluted at outdoor air. Why is that? Indoor air contains fumes from paints and finishes and also, how many of us keep air circulating? Most of the air is confined all day in the rooms of our homes.

what do to?
Its summer! Keep windows open and feel the nice cool breeze. This will get air circulating in your house so that it wont be so stuffy.

If you're painting, paint with low/no VOC which will be indicated on the can. They are odorless and they release no fumes! Dont worry, they all come in the same colors are their harmful counterparts.

MEATLESS MONDAYS !

DROP THE CHEESE BURGER!

"Meatless Mondays" is becoming increasingly popular. EAT NO MEAT ON MONDAYS. Its a step for people who would like to become a vegetarian but cant quit just cold turkey OR for people who simply would like to become more environmentally conscious when it comes to their consumption of food.

Why Monday? Studies have shown that behaviors are more likely maintained if begun at the beginning of the week.

Going "meatless" conserves water, reduces carbon footprints and lowers the intake of saturated fats!

Contrary to popular belief, you DON'T need meat for protein so you DON'T need meat every day with your meal.

Something to think about before you stop through McDonalds for lunch !

SONG OF THE YEAR!!!!

This video litterally changed my life at 6 years old. Everyone always asks me why and how I became so passionate about saving the environment and up until a few years ago I didnt know why. I knew that I LOVED the Earth Song by Michale Jackson and then I watched the video again a couple years ago and I realized, this is what opened my eyes.

So every since I was a kid I also knew I HAD to protect "Mother Nature" is what I called the environment. I was the little girl picking up trash on the playground instead of sliding on slides at the park. I would cry and get very angry when people would throw trash on the ground.

And then my Uncle Ron, who worked for the EPA, taught me all about recycling with his 10 recycling bins in his New Jersey home. Its all been up hill from there!

I LOVE MICHAEL JACKSON FOR THIS. Despite the horrible rumors about him, he was a humanitarian.

So PLEASE watch this video. And I hope it does to you, what it has to me.

"Earth Song"
Michael Jackson
What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain...
What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we've shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores?

What have we done to the world
Look what we've done
What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son...
What about flowering fields
Is there a time
What about all the dreams
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores
I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars
Now I don't know where we are
Although I know we've drifted far

Hey, what about yesterday
(What about us)
What about the seas
(What about us)
The heavens are falling down
(What about us)
I can't even breathe
(What about us)
What about apathy
(What about us)
I need you
(What about us)
What about nature's worth
It's our planet's womb
(What about us)
What about animals
(What about it)
We've turned kingdoms to dust
(What about us)
What about elephants
(What about us)
Have we lost their trust?
(What about us)
What about crying whales
(What about us)
We're ravaging the seas
(What about us)
What about forest trails
Burnt despite our pleas
(What about us)
What about the holy land
(What about it)
Torn apart by creed
(What about us)
What about the common man
(What about us)
Can't we set him free
(What about us)
What about children dying
(What about us)
Can't you hear them cry
(What about us)
Where did we go wrong
Someone tell me why
(What about us)
What about babies
(What about it)
What about the days
(What about us)
What about all their joy
(What about us)
What about the man
(What about us)
What about the crying man
(What about us)
What about Abraham
(What was us)
What about death again
Do we give a damn?

THE CLUBBING OF SEALS: CANADA'S HOBBY

Its crazy, I thought Canada was one of the worlds most environmentally conscious places. So for them to take place in this barbaric sport simply for their fur blows my mind. Canada will allow hunters to clubb 388,200 grey and hooded seals this year.

The current kill levels are higher than they have been in half a century.

Canada’s annual commercial clubbing of seals is the largest commercial hunt of marine mammals on the planet.

Veterinarians who studied the hunt concluded that the seal hunt failed to comply with Canada’s basic animal welfare standards. In 42 % of the cases studied, the seals had likely been skinned alive while conscious.

What is the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans thinking? He extended the hunting season well into June. There are no penalties if hunters exceed their quotas.

Seals are killed for their fur for fashion and seal oil as in afrodisiac in Asia. ALL HUMAN CONSUMPTION. If people were to open their eyes to the cruelty of animals and stop consumption of furs then there will be little to none production!

This hunt is subsidized by the Canadian government at tax payers expense. How does my canadians feel about that?

SAY NO TO EXXON !

Exxon oil oil spil in Alaska. This is nothing new. Exxon oil is a world renounced wild life slayer, ocean destroyer and land devastater. They have no reguard for the environmental AT ALL.

TAKE ACTION NOW!!! THE PLANET NEEDS YOU!!

Offshore drilling typically refers to the discovery and development of oil and gas resources which lie underwater through drilling a well.
Offshore drilling, especially in the arctic or close to the shore present environmental challenges.

HELP!

TELL OBAMA TO BREAK THE OIL ADDICTION !!!! CLICK HERE

The Obama administration is proposing to open drilling for oil and natural gas on the Atlantic coastline, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and then north coast of Alaska. This is 167 MILLION ACRES OF LAND! This will ONLY PLEASE BIG OIL COMPANIES while compromising the health and well being of wildlife such as the polar bears, whales, seals and other Arctic species!

THIS LAND HAS BEEN PROTECTED FOR DECADES! Obama's administration will bring an end to the protection if this happens !

The relatively small amounts of oil to be drilled in the offshore areas are not worth the environmental risks!
Interior Department estimates at the current rate of oil consumption, the production from the offshore drilling would supply at the most three years worth of oil.

IS IT WORTH IT??

Offshore drilling for oil and natural gas near the coasts of the United States was banned by Congress in 1981 after outcries caused by pollution from accidents and spills.

CHOCOLATE KILLS !!

Nestlé, which makes Kit Kats candy bars, uses unsustainable palm oil from Indonesian paradise rainforests. The big bad coporations are destroying the ancient forest all for chocolate! Deforestation (the destruction of trees) is causing the slowly but surely orang-utans extinction and harm to the local communities around the forests. These palm oil suppliers are not only draining the rainforest but also releasing massive amounts of carbon into the atmosphere AND THEN sets the cleared land on fire! THIS IS ILLEGAL!!

GREEN CELEBS

Woody Harrelson protested a lumber company's logging of ancient redwood trees by climbling the Golden Gate Bridge shutting down traffic for more than six hours! Kudos Mr. Harrelson. He also refused to eat real twinkies during filming of Zombieland and ate homemade vegan cornmeal Twinkies instead. In 2009, he recieved an honorary degree from York University for his contributions to enviornmentalism and sustainability. Ok one more thing! Woody ran Voice Yourself for 10 yrs!

Daryl Hannah is obviously a dedicated environmentalist. She has been arrested twice; once for protesting the bulldozing of the country's largest uban farm in LA (she chained herself to a tree for three weeks) and to protest against mountaintop removal in West Virginia. Hannah lives in a solar-powered house with graywater systems and owns a car that runs on biodiesal. Check out her blog! DH Love Life

Leonardo DiCaprio wrote, produced and narrated the an eco-documentary The 11th Hour. He also started the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation supporting environmentally friendly initiatives. Check this out, in order to be more envionrmentally friendly, he chooses not to fly private planes but he flies commercial!

Cameron Diaz was one of the first celebs to go green! She helped with 2007's Live Earth concert series. Diaz also starred in Cameron Diaz Saves the World, which urged people to find out more about the enviornment. She also co-wrote The Green Book: The Everyday Guide to Saving the Planet One Simple Step at a Time

BRAD PITT committed himself to building 150 homes using green technology and material in the 9th ward of New Orleans for the Hurricane Katrina victims. He also met with President Obama to discuss federally funding green housing projects.

Alicia Silverstone lives in an eco-friendly house with an organic veggie garden and a pack of rescued dogs to protect her. She also created her own natural cosmetics line and wrote The Kind Diet for her vegan lifestyle.

Natalie Portman is a long time vegetarian and animal-rights activist. In 2007, she designed a line of vegan shoes for Te Casan in which all profits were donated to envionmental organizations.
